From the very beginning of planning for our Music Video we knew the style we wanted to follow, each location we researched and visited had a similar, eery look and feel about it. This is the sort of location we wanted.

Star Image Essay - Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole is a popular British music artist famous for being in the Girl band  ‘Girls Aloud.’ In 2009 her first solo single was released and her solo Star Image was created. Within Cheryl’s first music video ‘Fight For This Love’ there are many aspects of Star Image, the Star Image is also constructed on her album cover ‘3 Words’ and her official website.

‘Fight For This Love’ includes many close up shots of Cheryl Cole; these shots allow the audience to focus and recognize her face as well as observe her gestures and emotion, for example at the very beginning of the video she looks directly into the camera during a close up shot.  There are also lots of mid shots of Cheryl where the audience is able to see more of her, her costume and her unique image. Cheryl has a very feisty and strong image in the video, which is particularly visible in her costume and props. She is wearing a military style outfit and hat.  She also has a dance sequence amongst a group of dancers which also creates a strong image. These types of shots represent the Star Image because of the huge focus on the artist. The long shots within the music video show the audience Cheryl’s full image as well as the props and mise en scene.

Within the music video Voyeurism is evident, the camera angles and focus and Cheryl’s body create the male gaze along with the choice of clothes. The lighting and camera work in the video really emphasizes her looks which again relates back to Voyeurism, this differs to some other artists and bands.

Cheryl Cole has huge media coverage over her and her life; the main focus is her image. A lot of articles about her focus on her looks so they tend include similar shots to what we can see in the Fight For This Love music video, lots of close up shots of her face and mid to long shots to show her body. Before releasing the single Fight For This Love, Cheryl already had a large amount of publicity since shooting to fame with the band Girls Aloud on the show Popstars: The Rivals and also becoming a judge on the hit show The X Factor therefore her first solo album and single were not short of press coverage.
